Merlo is situated on the western slope of Sierras de Los Comechingones. It is one of the most beautiful tourist regions of San Luis, with hills, streams and a microclimate. Villa de Merlo es hoy el sitio turístico más importante de la provincia de San Luis. Su origen se remonta a la época colonial. En 1794 Juan de Videla visita Piedra Blanca y al ver que el lugar se propiciaba para fundar una villa lo comunicó al Marqués de Sobremonte. El 1º de octubre de 1796 Sobremonte ordena que se formalice la fundación bajo el nombre de Villa de Merlo en honor a Pedro Melo de Portugal. La mañana del 1º de enero de 1797, el pueblo despertó al son de las campanas, los vecinos serían testigos de la fundación de la villa.
Junto a la imagen de la Virgen del Rosario la ceremonia se realizó frente a la Capilla y en esa oportunidad se eligió como patrono del pueblo a San Agustín. Con el paso del tiempo su nombre se deforma convirtiéndose en Villa de Merlo.
