This city makes up Cabo San Antonio, a practically straight coast that extends along 65 km. Along with San Clemente, Santa Teresita, Mar del Tuyú, San Bernardo and La Lucila del Mar it makes up a zone of large interconnected cities. During the third week of November, the National Festival of the Corvina rubia takes place .
An icon of Mar de Ajó is the Ship ¨La Margarita¨ that during a long time gave name to this beach. It was a boat of German flag that shipwrecked in 1880; nowadays it is an attraction in the zone. The Regional Automobile Racetrack Rubén Luis Di Palma gathers hundreds of lovers of car racing. At night, the Casino of Mar de Ajó becomes the attraction of the tourists.
Besides the beach activities along kilometers of beach that offers Mar de Ajó, the collection of shellfish such as clams and seafood is a traditional custom. From the Fishing Quay it is possible to pick up small species such as cornalitos (small atherines), anchovies, corvinas rubias and corvinas negras, atherines, brótolas and conger eels.
In Punta Médanos, located southwards Mar de Ajó, you can ride a horse or a cuatriciclo, activities that cannot be done in the other zones of the beach.
Southeast Mar de Ajó, 30 km away we find La Salada Grande Lagoon, a public place. It is home of a dense population of black-backed atherines which attract lovers of sport fishing. |

Mar de Ajó surge de un loteo realizado por los dueños de los terrenos adquiridos como parte de una estancia en el paraje denominado “La Margarita” donde se encontraban los restos del barco homónimo. Isaías Ramos Mejía y Rafael Cobo era los dueños y realizaron el loteo en 1934 recibiendo buena respuesta cuando lo ofrecieron a remate.
El nombre de Mar de Ajó fue oficialmente solicitado en Abril de 1935, como el nombre del loteo "La Margarita". Ese nombre deriva de la denominación de la zona desde la colonización, conocida como o “ajó” o “tuyú” que significa barro. Por decreto Municipal de General Lavalle, Nº 4103 del año 1964, se declara el día 21 de Diciembre de 1935 la fecha oficial de la creación de Mar de Ajó.
Pero el verdadero impulso de la zona se lo da el italiano Don Fulvio Plácido Springolo. Una persona de mundo que propone a Ramos Mejía y a Cobo desarrollar un balneario. Ad honorem se encargó de realizar tareas, tramitaciones, estudios y trabajos, para concretar la construcción de las primeras edificaciones, entre ellas la Hostería La Margarita.
